Truth

President Bush has hit a new low in this here "Red" state..Those who approve of him have dropped to only 40% of our fair minded citizens. Active disapproval is 57% so there is a clear divide.

Good job, Republicans! 40% of you hang in there no mater what. The Captain is getting ino the lifeboat but you guys are going to stay there and make sure the band keeps playing. But don't worry...We know what your problem is.

You can't think!

Pat sent a link to Massimo. All I can say is that he has an intillectually rigorous essay on what we should already know...The real war is not between Religion and Science...It is between Religion and Clear Thought. Here's a snip from a really smart person:

"The fact is, the teaching of critical thinking and understanding of the nature of science are more properly – or at least equally – seen as the domains of philosophy, and require engaging philosophers as well as scientists in the response to fundamentalism. Moreover, as I have tried to argue above, much of the roots of anti-intellectualism and anti-science thinking are to be found in issues of ethics and religion, again the proper domain of philosophy, and areas in which scientists usually find themselves unprepared and uneasy. We need not turn scientists into philosophers, nor can we pretend that the general public be knowledgeable of the depth of scientific and philosophical inquiry. What we can and need to do – urgently – is to promote wide, inter-disciplinary efforts at educating scientists, science educators, and the public at large about the best ways to see the science-society-religion triangle. Nothing short of the future of modern civilization depends on it."

Quote of the Day:

"Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."

Thomas Jefferson

When someone wants to discuss politics, religion, or science with me, I try to start with the premise that we can do this only with each of us considering the possibilty that we may be wrong and that the other side may, in fact, be correct. This can sometimes prevent arguments with fundamentalist or "FundXtians" as the Commander calls them. But usually, all folks want to do is win the argument...they don't want to join in the search for the truth...That search for truth is what Science is all about.

Nothing more...Nothing less!

Science is Truth.

Peace,

Steve
